Separation

Victims, each one, for his own survival, how many breaths divide us? Vittime, ognuno, della propria sopravvivenza, quanti respiri ci dividono? Victimes, chacun, de la propre survie, combien de souffles nous divisent?

Exhibition: Smartphone Photography in Art Gallery

Artwork by Milla Kazimir

Inner Travel Artwork by Milla Kazimir

Inner Travel artwork will be presented at WikiArte Gallery in Bologna for a collective exhibition, Jan. 4th to 23rd 2014. This is not a simple mixed-media artwork composed by photographic paper glued on a painted canvas, it aims at representing the role of mobile or cellphone photography into the contemporary art gallery system. Moreover it is also a symbolic representation of a journey towards and inside a mixture of dimensions. On a white canvas, within a black windy frame, lay nine photos printed on glossy paper. They were taken during a travel by train from Pisa to Rome through a smartphone camera, and shared on Facebook and Twitter in real-time. The low resolution and low specs of the mobile camera were fundamental, because I wanted to highlight movement and long exposure effects to create a fusion of time and space, a fluid closed container.
I was particularly happy when I knew that my artwork had been selected for the collective exhibition Premio Expo Bologna 2014, because my purpose was to present mobile photography in a classical environment, such as a contemporary art gallery.

Due to better and better technology applied to cameras embedded into smartphone and tablet mostly everyone can obtain quality results and, most important factor, can share it pretty immediately on social profiles. The expression “I share, therefore I am” (cit. Sherry Turkle) is now evident anywhere, anytime: just consider David Cameron, Barack Obama and Helle Thorning-Schmidt taking a selfie during Mandela memorial service, or that (mostly) anyone can take part to the iPhone Photography award. Smartphone and mobile photography is now considered an artform, but can we consider it already outdated? I am posing myself this question, because Google Glass use is definitely going to redefine photography in the next future.

Moi, j’avait choisi, finalement.

The Overlap Techique

digital photography techniques with levels

Merging of two photographs plus writings – street art on a photograph

I developed the Overlap Technique with some photographs I took at EX Tacheles Galerie in Berlin. I think it’s the most representative case of deterioration of imagination and freedom to do true art. Then, I wanted to celebrate this temple of genuine art the same days and month of its closure, which occurred in September 2012.

The Overlap Technique consists in digitally merging two or even more photographs together taking into consideration proportions, colors and positioning of things into the frame. Through these overlaps I try to create new associations of ideas, in this case all is connected to the sad and insane relationship between art and business.

I took inspiration by fading movie technique: I try to recreate fading into a single photograph, in particular freezing the moment in which the different scenes stand at their maximum visibility to convey the most powerful message. I also add writings, resulting in a sort of street art applied to photographs. The writings are taken from articles published on various magazines and blogs concerning the closure of this Art Center.

I’ll develop this technique in the future, also for more deep, lyrical and existential themes. Stay tuned ;)

Technique examples on my new online portfolio under Experimental Collection.

I love to use window light and a reflective panel for my photo-portraits. And Gerbera flowers are the best models ever! :)

Existentialism Series

Finally, I created a new page on my Official Website. It’s called “Existentialism” and includes an unreleased collection of some of my photography artworks. LINK: Existentialism

Now the first work is Existence: there are many photos, as well as a poetry in English and French. “Existence” is dedicated to feelings and thoughts, reflections, questions, dilemma about human conditions in post-modern era, in relation to nature (seawater, waves and sunset) and urban places (underpasses, with their typical light/shadow situations). Consider these images as a time suspension, a moment to stay in silence with your inner side trying to feel yourself calm and quite.

“Existence” had to be published on a book, but I couldn’t find anything really affordable regarding print and distribution systems, so I ended up publishing it on Internet, free to everyone with an available Internet connection. Please share to friends, even if they are not connected!
Thank you, reader! Have a nice life!

Visions from “Francis Bacon and the Existential Condition in Contemporary Art” Exhibition

Centro di Cultura Contemporanea Strozzina, Florence (Oct. 5th, 2012 to Jan. 27th, 2013; Artists: Francis Bacon, Nathalie Djurberg, Adrian Ghenie, Chiharu Shiota, Annegret Soltau, Arcangelo Sassolino)

Maybe in the last months my inspirations come almost completely from issues and questions about existentialism and moral human condition, considering also the global crisis period, or maybe having met Francis Bacon had a deep impact, long time ago while being an art student, on reasons of my art need, this exhibition fell on the right time, therefore a visit was peremptory.

Some details from Francis Bacon works, in particular his paint technique:

Francis Bacon Technique

Francis Bacon - Untitled (Three Figures) 1981

Francis Bacon - Seated Figure 1974

Reflection Self-portrait with Francis Bacon painting

The exhibition section about materials used by Francis Bacon for his works is pretty special. One cannot really understand an artist, both from past times and contemporary, without having an idea about his lifestyle, his friends, his sources of inspiration, and through this exhibition you can get a general knowledge about the photographs, the microsurgery books, the magazines Francis Bacon used.

Nathalie Djurberg
The Swedish artist uses plasticine figures which act into stop motion technique movies to let pour out human relation dynamics, often well buried into people’s mind. Visitors can watch her movies from within narrow spaces, like a cave or a small wood house for children, involving also a real physical change of perspective for adults.

Adrian Ghenie
Visual subtraction of fundamental historical characters and transfiguration of pop themes from last century are magically spread and mixed into large canvas. Definitely my favorite artist within the exhibition.

Adrian Ghenie - Particolar from a Pie Fight Study

Adrian Ghenie - Self Portrait as a Monkey

Annegret Soltau
Collage of sewed photographs, performance with black filaments connecting people, the constriction of the thread onto the body.

Chiharu Shiota
The Japanese artist realizes site-specific installations using black thin wool threads which trap things like a spider’s web. Silence, fixed time and limited space of the installation crystallize into the visitor’s path, from a sense of littleness for the human being along the way to the sense of lost time when leaving the installation room.

Arcangelo Sassolino
The extreme tension between physically possible and unpredictable material breaking are explored into his installation, specifically set up for Strozzina Center. Visitors can face directly the piston drive, its movement and the produced sound, until the final tension release.
